![]() ![]() Most of it is around the far fringes of the formula-twisting plot, in which Rod must jump 15 buses on his shonky bike to get his dying stepdad a heart transplant, so Rod can fight him, one day beat him and gain his respect. A film so strange it should be a novelty instead has a strong feeling of been-there-done-that. Then there are the echoes of recent nerd-fests Napoleon Dynamite (Rod’s sullenness and flouncy run) and Eagle Vs Shark (Rod’s paternal issues). Without Anchorman, the set-up (four buddies natter in surreal non-sequiturs) would seem innovative. Ironically, it’s Ferrell who’s ruined it for them. Bad news is, there’s not a lot that’s fresh here. ![]() ![]() Hot Rod brims over with fried-gold sight gags, nostalgia for the more embarrassing elements of the ’80s/early ’90s and a warped sense of innocence. With this tale of an aspiring but inept stuntman (Samberg), scripted by South Park’s Pam Brady, the good news is that their talent’s confirmed. Now, Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone have jumped to the big screen, following in the footsteps of SNL forerunners from Will Ferrell to Tina Fey. Written by SNL up-and-comers Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, and performed by Samberg and Timberlake, the music video is a bonkers R ’n’ B paean to the joys of putting your “junk” into a holed receptacle and presenting it to the love of your life. It's abysmal and uninspired enough to make you reassess the merits of the picture before the credits have even begun.Fans of Saturday Night Live, Justin Timberlake or gift-wrapped genitalia will be acquainted with the YouTube classic Dick In A Box. Going out of his way to shock, Woods' film goes wrong because for all his youthful arrogance, THURSDAY isn't half as original as he no doubt thinks. And the havoc sown on the picturesque picket fence suburb is cruelly effective. The violence makes you squirm and laugh, so at least it hits the mark, even when it aims low. The day-in-a-life saga, and flexible pace are sometimes a blast. Against the leagues of Tarantino ripoff's on the market, you could do much worse than THURSDAY. Spontaneous raps about Star Trek, the sadistically amusing torture of a helpless, bound man, and drug-dealer flashbacks all ring a bell. Compared to FICTION or RESERVOIR DOGS, THURSDAY is as flawed as you'd expect. We've seen everything in THURSDAY before, so you'd best enjoy this film without the baggage of seeing PULP FICTION - and that's a tall ask. ![]() Want a film that's hip, loaded with attitude, funny and shocking at once, packed to the rafters with wild lowlifes? Skip Woods has delivered one, but about five years too late. ![]()
